Pedigree notes

A Champion Sprinter and four-time G1 winner, including the G1 Diamond Jubilee and G1 King's Stand Stakes (twice) at Royal Ascot.

Previous Diamond Jubilee winners include the successful sires Choisir, Starspangledbanner, Royal Applause and the incomparable Danehill. Previous King's Stand winners include Choisir, Pivotal and Australian Champion Sire, Last Tycoon. It’s hard to find a better CV for a stallion prospect. Combined with his high cruising speed, excellent temperament and impressive physique, Blue Point has all the credentials for sire success and is delivering on this promise with his first crops.

In 2023, Blue Point was the runaway leading first season sire in Britain with 36 individual winners and in 2024, he has a bigger leading margin on the second season list to date. In the 2023/2024 season, Blue Point was the equal fourth leading first season sire by individual winners in Australia with nine winners, including three Stakes Performers.

G1 Statistics
Shamardal has sired 27 G1 winners worldwide, including five in Australia. All five in Australia and 14 out of 27 have a return of Sir Gaylord or his half-brother in the mare. The Sir Gaylord sire line is prolific in Australia via Sir Tristram, Zabeel, Octagonal, Lonhro, Pierro, Savabeel, etc. Shamardal’s G1 winners have strong connection with the Green Desert/Danzig line while his son Lope De Vega has sired two of his four Australian G1 winners from just 14 runners out of mares by Danehill’s son Fastnet Rock.

This trend is clearly being reflected in the first 10 Stakes Performers sired by Blue Point himself. His triple G1 winner Rosallion is out of a Galileo/Sadler’s Wells line mare and another one of his G1 winners, Big Evs, is out of a Green Desert/Danzig line mare. Altogether five of his 10 Stakes Winners are out of Danzig line mares, three Green Desert line and two Danehill line including one out of an Exceed And Excel mare.

Best Nicks
Shamardal’s most successful nicking stats are with mares from the major broodmare sirelines of Mr Prospector, Sadler’s Wells and Green Desert/Danehill. Lope De Vega has similarly good results with mares from those broodmare sirelines. Shamardal is a grandson of Storm Cat and the Storm Cat/Mr Prospector crosses and reverse crosses have been some of the most successful in contemporary pedigrees. Blue Point’s G1 winners Rosallion and Big Evs are early pointers toward his emerging nick with the Galileo/Sadler’s Wells lines and Oasis Dream/Danzig lines. Two of his three Australian Stakes Performers are also out of Danehill line mares.

A particularly powerful nick is emerging between I Am Invincible and Shamardal with the first three and only three runners bred on this cross all being Stakes Winners including two G1 winners, nine time G1 winning champion sprinter Imperatriz and G1 winner Move To Strike. These are exceptional statistics which are reinforced by other very successful nicks involving sons of I Am Invincible and sons of Shamardal, providing very strong clues that the reverse Shamardal (and sons)/I Am Invincible crosses look to have huge potential.

Inbreeding / Linebreeding options
The most obvious candidates for inbreeding to Blue Point are the Blue Hen mares Helen Street and Best In Show. Blue Point’s sire Shamardal is out of a full sister to Street Cry whose dam is Helen Street. Blue Point’s dam is from the Try My Best Line and that stallion has Best In Show as his second dam. Of equal interest in Blue Point’s pedigree are the names that are missing, including Galileo, Sadler’s Wells, Danehill, Fastnet Rock, Street Cry and Dalakhani, all of which have had excellent results when introduced to Shamardal. Early results for Blue Point look promising with two of his four Stakes Winners are by New Approach and Tobougg, both from the Sadler’s Wells line via Galileo and Barathea respectively.

Strategy One
Mares by Green Desert line sires such as I Am Invincible, Cape Cross or Sea The Stars would replicate this successful early pattern for Blue Point which has now already yielded his first crop G1 winner Big Evs. Mares by I Am Invincible and his sons look particularly suitable given the very strong nick between those two stallions already in evidence.

Strategy Two
Introduce missing broodmare sires to replicate Shamardal’s best results. Mares by Dalakhani’s son Reliable Man would replicate the Pinatubo cross, mares by Galileo or sons would replicate the cross which produced Earthlight for Shamardal and Rosallion for Blue Point himself. Mares by Street Cry would replicate the Victor Ludorum cross and mares by Fastnet Rock and sons would replicate the Santa Ana Lane/Gytrash cross.

Strategy Three
The majority of Blue Point’s first Australian winners and Stakes placegetters are mirroring his northern hemisphere successes with Danzig/Green Desert/Danehill line mares. This broad strategy is an obvious tactic that should continue to produce good results.

Strategy Four
Blue Point’s early Stakes success with Sadler’s Wells line sires presents opportunities to send mares from that line. High-quality sources include Galileo, High Chaparral, So You Think, Dundeel, Medaglia D’Oro, Toronado, Teofilo, Frankel, Kermadec, New Approach, Tavistock, Tivaci, Redwood, Contributer, Montjeu and many others. This cross has already produced his first crop G1 winner Rosallion.

Strategy Five
Inbreeding to Best In Show has been the best cross for Redoute’s Choice with big numbers tried. As Best In Show is the 4th dam of Redoute’s Choice and 2nd dam of Try My Best in the direct broodmare sire line of Blue Point, mares by Redoute’s Choice or descendants and mares by Try My Best’s descendants such as Last Tycoon and Written Tycoon would create suitable inbreeding patterns. Blue Point’s first crop Australian G2 VRC Sires’ placed Bosustow is bred this way.

Strategy Six
Inbreeding to Helen Street has already produced Darley’s undefeated two-year-old Victor Ludorum and can be achieved using mares by sires such as Street Cry, Street Boss, Pride Of Dubai, Hallowed Crown or Territories, or with mares whose dam or second dam is by any of those sires. The Street Cry lines also provide the successful Shamardal/Mr Prospector nick.
