Darley stallion Reset sired his first Group One victor on Saturday when Rebel Raider landed the Victorian Derby at Flemington, creating history in the process.
Ridden by top South Australian rider Clare Lindop, who became the first female jockey to land the prestigious race, he was settled slightly behind than midfield before making his move approaching the 1000m pole. Swinging wide round the turn, he got the better of the favourite Whobegotyou, by fellow Darley stallion Street Cry, by two-and-a-half lengths with another two-and-a-quarter lengths back to the third.
Rebel Raider now has the distinction of being his sire's first ever winner, his first pattern winner and, now, his first top-flight winner.
Bred by Harry Perks and Trevor Robertson at Toorak Park Stud, he is the first winner out of G1-placed Dehere mare, Picholine. Mark Kavanagh, trainer of the runner-up, can take solace in the fact that he purchased a two-year-old half-brother to Rebel Raider, by Shamardal, called Shamoline Warrior for $60,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and the mare has a yearling filly by champion first-season stallion, Exceed And Excel.
Rebel Raider's win promotes his sire Reset into pole position in the leading second-season sires' table with prize-money of $1,036,865, more than $400,000 clear of his nearest pursuers, fellow Darley stallions, Exceed And Excel and Lohnro. Dubai Destination has also been enjoying a good spell recently with three new maiden winners in the last week. He is in joint-second place numerically, having sired seven winners so far this year.
