Exceed And Excel’s consistent performer, Leading Spirit, who has placed twice in Group races this year, earned a well-deserved first Black Type victory when landing the 1200m G3 Mahab Al Shimaal on the dirt at Meydan, UAE on Saturday, 2 March.
The charge of Bhupat Seemar, Leading Spirit, who is owned by Touch Gold Racing, broke smartly under Pat Cosgrave and travelled strongly in mid-division, but with 400m to run the gelding made his challenge down the outside and swept past the leaders to clinch the race by a length and a half.
Leading Spirit is one of three winners out of the Stakes-winning mare Inspiriter (Invincible Spirit), herself a half-sister to G2 hero, Lazuli.
Exceed And Excel, who stands at Kelvinside, NSW, is the sire of 18 G1 winners including last year’s English 1000 Guineas heroine, Mawj. He is the world’s most prolific sire of two-year-olds having so far sired 89 Stakes-winning juveniles. He is also the sire of young Darley stallions, Microphone and Bivouac, who stand at Kelvinside.
