PROFILE: Ribchester - elite, tough, natural

Written by Mike Hedge

More recently Magic Millions in January has been labeled the sales source of juvenile speed, however, in recent times Champion mare and Magic Millions graduate Winx (Street Cry) defied this trend winning a world record 25 G1s, 20 elite-level races at a mile plus.

For the purpose of this exercise, we included the total purse for sought-after restricted races including The Everest ($14 million in October 2019), All-Star Mile ($5 million in March 2020), Magic Millions 2YO Classic ($2 million in 2020), and the Inglis 2YO Millenium ($2 million in 2020) in G1 prizemoney calculations at these are races targetted by owners and trainers.

We looked at last season (2019/20) prizemoney on G1 races and the findings were thought-provoking:

  • 1,000m to 1,500m: 32 races and $43.530 million prizemoney click here
  • 1,600m to 3,200m: 40 races and $58.1 million prizemoney click here

The average prizemoney for the 'sprinting' features was $1.360 million per race and for races run over a mile-plus, the average was $1.452 million.

Buyers should take confidence in purchasing yearlings whose type and pedigree suggest they will thrive over a mile plus, especially with the lucrative prizemoney on offer - including the progeny of twice European Champion miler Ribchester.

As a racehorse he was elite. He raced 16 times, 15 at Group level and 11 of those at Group 1 level.

Ribchester’s progression to champion status began when victorious at just his third start in the G2 Mill Reef Stakes, one of four runs as a two-year-old which included a gallant third in the G1 Sussex Stakes, Britain's G1 Golden Slipper equivalent.

This juvenile performance highlighted his natural ability and soundness to be able to thrive under the rigors of racing asked of juveniles.

Twice voted Europe’s Champion miler; Ribchester won four G1 races including the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in which the son of Iffraaj broke the track record when completing the mile faster than any horse in the three centuries.

He won Stakes races at two, three, and four; and he retired sound and at his peak.

From a select book at 33 live foals, eight of which are in the Godolphin system, the opportunity to purchase his stock is limited.

Ribchester is represented by three yearlings at Magic Millions Gold Coast in January including:

  • Lot 237: a colt out of Donna Dingles, a half-sister to G3 winner Mamwaazel. This is her second foal, her first foal is a two-year-old by Shooting To Win.
