The G2 King Edward VII Stakes was originally known as the Ascot Derby and on the fourth day of the Royal meeting, Teofilo’s son Permian made amends for a below-par run at Epsom, adding a second G2 win to his CV with aplomb.
Always prominent under William Buick, Permian was perfectly poised to make his move as the field approached the bend and soon taking the lead, moved clear and was more than capable of holding off the late challenge from eventual third Crystal Ocean and Khalidi to win by half a length.
Trained by Mark Johnston, Permian is a busy campaigner who won three times and placed twice in six starts at two. This year, he was beaten just a short head in the Derby trial at Epsom before cruising to a four-and-a-half-length victory in the Listed Newmarket Stakes on Guineas weekend. He then added his first Pattern win in the G2 Dante Stakes, finishing ahead of yesterday’s G3 Hampton Court Stakes winner Benbatl (Dubawi). A step up to G1 level is now very much on the cards for this talented colt.
Permian is out of the multiple Stakes winner Tessa Reef (Mark Of Esteem), dam of two further Black type performers in Second Wave (New Approach) and Samana Cay (Authorized). Tessa Reef is herself out of a half-sister to the great Miesque.
Permian is one of 21 European-bred Group-performing three-year-olds for Teofilo over distances of ten furlongs or more. Others include his Irish Derby winner Trading Leather, G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Pleascach and Classic performers Tarfasha and Light Heavy.
Teofilo has sired 20 individual Black type performers so far this year, including G1 winner Humidor and fellow G2 winners Palentino and Brazuca.
