Unbeaten Irish galloper and now champion stallion Teofilo has already sired two Melbourne Cup winners and he could make it three later this year if impressive three-year-old Alegron continues his rise through the staying ranks in Australia.
On Monday, 25 April, Alegron won the Listed VRC St Leger over 2,800m at Flemington - the track where Cross Counter (2018) and Twilight Payment (2020) scored their most famous wins in the race that stops a nation.
A gallant second in the VRC Derby behind Hitotsu at the same track last spring, Alegron went into the race after a close third to Hitotsu in the G1 Australian Derby at Randwick in Sydney.
The gelding, out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Alegria, was well back in the field but produced a giant finishing performance for champion jockey Damien Oliver to beat The Cunning Fox by 2.25 lengths with Fearentless another 1.75 lengths away in third place.
The win took Alegron’s prize money earnings to A$904,515 with more likely to come.
Godolphin head trainer James Cummings could now take Alegron to Adelaide for the G1 South Australian Derby (2,500m) at Morphettville on 14 May and maybe to Brisbane for the G1 Queensland Derby (2,400m) at Eagle Farm on 28 May.
In scoring his first black-type victory, Alegron became Teofilo’s 104th Stakes winner worldwide.
Teofilo has already sired 22 G1 and stands at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in County Kildare, Ireland for a service fee of 30,000 euros.
