Whitman the latest winner for Poet’s Voice
First-season sire Poet's Voice recorded his fifth individual winner on 2 July when his son Whitman landed the six-furlong maiden at Newbury in gutsy fashion.
Soon in front under James Doyle, the Mark Johnston-trained colt travelled well throughout and held off the challenge from Kitaaby to win by a neck.
Whitman is out of the Japanese-bred mare Sundrop, who was second in both the 1,000 Guineas and the G1 Fillies’ Mile. She won two Group races during her racing career, plus a further win at Stakes level in the Listed Several Stakes.
Poet’s Voice was himself a Group winner at two, going on to land the G1 QEII Stakes in thrilling style. He was quick off the mark at stud when his very first runner, Black Magic, became his first winner. He is also sire of winning colt Ode To Evening, who was a creditable fifth in the G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, plus fellow winners Voice Of Love and Montsarrat.
