New Approach colt wins trial
With his first crop of Australian-bred runners heading to the trials over the last week, Champion two and three-year-old New Approach produced a smart one in the shape of the Clinton McDonald-trained Mattan, who won his 800m trial by a neck from All Rigged Up, with Street Cry colt Avalanches a half-neck back in third.
With three two-year-old trials held on the day, the other two were taken out by Exceed And Excel colt Kuroshio, a full sister to the G3 winner Believe'n'succeed and the other trial went the way of Hard Spun filly Quest For Peace who took her 800m trial out by two lengths.
Out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Future Choice, Mattan is a half-brother to the G3-winning Lonhro mare Eight Till Late and comes from the family of Champion Singapore-based galloper Always Certain. Bred by the New Zealand-based Hamilton Stud Ltd and Woodlawn Park Stud in NSW, Mattan was offered through the draft of Glastonbury Farm as agent and sold at the Inglis Premier yearling sale for $90,000.
Arguably one of the world’s hottest young sires, New Approach is the sire of eight individual winners from his first northern hemisphere crop including the unbeaten G1 winner Dawn Approach, G3 winner Newfangled, Listed winner Tha’ir and the Stakes performer Rasmeyaa.
Standing the current southern hemisphere season at Darley’s Victorian-base Northwood Park at a fee of $33,000 (inc. GST), New Approach has once again received significant support from some of Australasia’s most successful breeders.
