At the Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale in 2009 a grey Reset colt out of G3-winning Danewin mare Dane Belltar went through the ring as lot 315. Consigned by Mill Park Stud, the colt was knocked down for just $70,000.
In October last year that colt, now a six-year-old gelding named Fawkner, won one of the most prestigious races on the Australian racing calendar, the G1 Caulfield Cup.
Fawkner became the third G1 winner for Reset who had already sired Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker and VRC Derby winner Rebel Raider.
The next renewal of the Melbourne Premier yearling sale begins on Sunday week and buyers will have nine opportunities to find the next Fawkner with Reset having five colts and four fillies set to go under the hammer.
Among them is lot 569, another grey colt consigned by Mill Park Stud who will be hoping lightning can strike twice. The seventh foal of city-winning Unbridled’s Song mare Sothern Rose, the colt is a half-brother to five winners including promising New Approach three-year-old White Roe. Reset also has three yearlings as part of the Blue Riband section of the sale including lot 205, a colt out of Listed winner Aldarch.
Although they are only two-year-olds, four of Domesday’s first Victorian-bred crop have already been placed at Stakes level. With 14 yearlings from his second crop catalogued for Melbourne Premier, they are expected to be highly sought after.
Lot 108 is a Domesday daughter of Listed-winning Danehill mare Chuckle, the dam of G3 winner Hoofit. Consigned by Rheinwood Pastoral, the filly comes from the family of G1-winning Exceed And Excel two-year-olds Reward For Effort and Overreach. The Phoenix Broodmare Farm-consigned Domesday colt out of G3 winner La Rieuse will be sold as lot 335 and is also expected to have plenty of admirers.
Lonhro and his son Denman are both well represented with 12 and 19 lots catalogued respectively. The highlights in Lonhro’s entries include lot 209, the second foal of G3 winner Bashful Girl and lot 615, a daughter of G2 winner Truly Wicked, dam of recent HK-1 winning Exceed And Excel sprinter Amber Sky.
Denman also has a half-sibling to a current Exceed And Excel speedster catalogued with the Kornong Stud Farm-consigned lot 53. A half-brother to Jabali, runner-up in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial and G3 Blue Diamond Prelude at his only two starts, the colt’s price will soar if Jabali can prevail in the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes tomorrow.
Exceed And Excel himself has 12 yearlings catalogued including a colt out of G1 winner Recurring to be sold by Three Bridges Thoroughbreds as lot 500. Among a group of quality Exceed And Excel fillies in the sale is lot 333, a half-sister to G1 performer Ring Ringa Rosie.
Other well represented Darley stallions include Bernardini with 13 lots and New Approach with 18 lots, while the ever popular Commands is set to have six yearlings go under the hammer.
