The first yearlings of New Approach, the champion two-year-old and five-time Group 1 winner, have been well received during the opening session of Europe’s biggest yearling sale.
With his colts being two of the top seven lots on the first day, the freshman sire had nine yearlings sell for an average of 222,222gns, more than seven times his 2009 covering fee.
Seamus Burns bred Princess Haya’s sensational Derby winner and it was his Lodge Park Stud that consigned New Approach’s top-priced horse of the day, a colt out of Lady Miletrian (Barathea), who was knocked down for 500,000gns.
A Highclere Stud-consigned colt out of the Dubai Millennium mare Ladeena had passed through the ring just five lots earlier and fetched 450,000gns.
Gill Richardson went to 250,000gns for a New Approach half-sister to the G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Simply Perfect out of Hotelgenie Dot Com (Selkirk) from the Catridge farm Stud consignment.
Another well-related offering was the half-brother to Hong Kong champion Viva Pataca. The colt, from the Highclere draft, caught the eye of Shadwell’s Angus Gold and was sold for 220,000gns.
