She may be only small but Red Ransom filly Romneya is all heart, as she demonstrated when battling bravely to land the G2 Fillies' Classic at Moonee Valley on Saturday, defeating Lamarr (by Darley Australia's Quest For Fame) by half a length.
She is certainly consistent, as in her eleven-race career she has recorded five victories (three now at Listed and above), four seconds and two fourths.
Bred in the purple by Darley Australia, she is a half-sister to G1 Victoria Derby winner Benicio out of the exceptionally fast mare Mannington, who won the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude and placed twice at G1 level. Other distinguished members of her family include the G1 winners Bint Marscay, Bollinger, Filante, Kenny's Best Pal and Stella Cadente.
At Randwick, Shamardal (pictured) filly Marquardt gained valuable black type for herself and her sire when running third in the Listed Widden Stakes over 1100m. Making her second start after a successful debut at Rosehill, she was checked at a vital stage before running on in the stretch to be beaten two-lengths by the winner.
Bred by Little Avondale Trust, she is out of the Centaine mare Centrefold Angel and a relative of G1 scorers Dandy Andy and Ballroom Babe.
On Sunday in Italy, Xenes, by Darley Japan's Xaar, ran out victorious in the Listed Premio Enrico Camici. This was the first time the Scuderia Antonella bred colt had got his head in front in a Stakes race after being placed five times previously.
