Tampiko steals Prime Minister's Cup

Progressive Lonhro mare Tampiko snatches victory in a thrilling photo to take out the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup at the Gold Coast

Racing midfield, the Peter Moody-trained Tampiko was ably ridden by fellow Queenslander Chris Munce. The Melbourne Cup-winning rider wove a path to find clear running and the daughter of Lonhro proved best on the post, winning the race by a nose.

A winner of 8 races from 23 starts, the lightly raced five-year-old has covered much of Australia in the past month, racing in Adelaide and Melbourne at her past two starts.

Tampiko was bred by Turangga Farm proprietor Stuart Ramsey, and is the first foal of G1-winning Canny Lad mare Ancient Song. Sold for $500,000 at the 2007 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the Tampiko began her career in New Zealand, before finding her way into the Moody Stable just over 12 months ago.

The victory gives champion Lonhro his 23rd individual Stakes winner, and his 10th for the Australian season. Having already sired G1-performers Denman, Beaded, Miss Octopussy and Pinwheel, Lonhro will stand at Darley's Kelvinside property this season for a fee of $77,000 including GST.
