Sapphire Street gave a head start and a beating to her older rivals when a brilliant winner of the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic over 1,400m on Saturday, 27 April at Ascot in Perth.
In winning her first race at Stakes level, the three-year-old filly also gave her Darley sire Street Boss the second leg of a feature-race double on the day after Elphinstone had easily won the $500,000 VOBIS Platinum Guineas at Caulfield.
Sapphire Street settled at the tail of the field before apprentice Luke Campbell took off at the 500m pole.Trained on the track by Daniel Morton, Sapphire Street collared Laced Up Heels in the final 100m to score by a long neck with Madame Magic a half-length away in third place.
Out of the Australian mare Necklet, Sapphire Street was bred and is raced by Oakland Park Stud at North Jindong in Western Australia and has a yearling half-sister by Blue Point.
Victory took Sapphire Street’s record to four wins and four placings from 15 starts for total prize money and bonuses of $336,360.
Street Boss was a dual G1 winner on the track and continues to sire winners all over the world.
The sire of 2022-23 Australian Horse of the Year Anamoe (nine G1 wins), Street Boss now has 929 winners – including 71 individual Stakes race winners of 141 Black-Type events.
His yearlings at sales in Australia this year have fetched up to $575,000.
Street Boss will again stand at Darley’s Northwood Park stud in Victoria next season for a service fee of $66,000, GST inclusive.
