A group of Caulfield trainers could be set for a private challenge when the high-priced Brazen Beau yearlings they have bought at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale go into training later this year.
Prominent handlers Ciaron Maher and Mick Price on Monday joined fellow Caulfield trainer Colin Little on the Brazen Beau bandwagon and will take home a pair of outstanding colts from the sale.
Maher got things rolling on Day 2 of the sale when he paid $575,000 for Lot 227, a colt from the Stakes-winning Rubiton mare Innovation Girl.
Maher said the colt consigned by Blue Gum Farm “selected himself”.
“There’s a lot of speed there, and a lot of quality,” Maher said.
Innovation Girl won 10 races, including four as a two-year-old, her biggest success coming in the G2 Ascot Vale Stakes.
Price picked up on the theme, going to $380,000 soon after to secure the Brazen Beau colt from the Savabeel mare Li’l Miss Hayley offered by Stonehouse Thoroughbreds.
The colt is the 10th Brazen Beau of the sale to make six figures, including the $800,000 sale topper sold on Day 1.
Little, the trainer of 2007 Cox Plate winner El Segundo, went to $250,000 on Sunday for the Brazen Beau filly from the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Colerne.
In the same session, a colt by Darley’s first-season sire Kermadec sold for $200,000, the third highest price yet paid for a yearling by the son of Teofilo.
