First season sires on top at Premier

Denman and Von Costa de Hero fly the flag for the Darley stallions on day one at the Inglis Premier

As the 2013 Inglis Premier yearling sale began at Oaklands on 3 March, Darley’s first-season sires Denman and Von Costa de Hero produced extremely pleasing results, as did many of the other established Darley sires.

With three lots sold during the first day of the sale, Lonhro’s G1-winning son Denman had a top priced of $175,000 achieved for lot 87. The first foal from a Viscount half-sister to Stakes-winning Lonhro mare Dysphonia, the Gleneld Park (as agent)-consigned filly was purchased by leading Western Australian trainer Neville Parnham.

For three or more yearlings sold, Denman ended the day as the leading first-season sire with an average of $116,333, only marginally behind his sire Lonhro, who ended the first day of selling as the leading sire on averages with $128,333.

Encosta de Lago’s G1 Golden Slipper runner up Von Costa de Hero only had one yearling sell on the first day, with lot 103, the first foal from a Redoute’s Choice half-sister to dual G1-winning juvenile Hasna knocked down to Triple Crown Syndications for $130,000, the highest price achieved for a yearling by a first-season sire at the sale.

The overall top lot of the sale on day one went to lot 43, a bay colt from the second Australian crop of the unbeaten G1 Dewhurst Stakes winner Teofilo. Consigned from the draft of Tyreel Stud, the colt is the second foal of the Fastnet Rock mare San Cristobel and was knocked down to Melbourne trainer Mick Kent for $250,000.

The sale continues on Monday.
