Denman does it on day one at Karaka

Two yearlings by Denman sell extremely well, while fellow Darley stallions also provide positive results

After achieving very good prices for yearlings at the recent Magic Millions yearling sale, Lonhro’ G1-winning son Denman has once again sold very well, this time on day one of the New Zealand Bloodstock's Premier yearling sale at Karaka.

The first of his two lots to go through the ring was lot 108, a brown colt out of the Stakes placed Distinctive Lass. Knocked down to Jason Abraham’s Champion Thoroughbreds for NZ$170,000, the colt will head to the stable of leading Randwick-based trainer John O’Shea.

The other Denman yearling to sell on day one was lot 190, a brown colt of the Entrepreneur mare Jacilo. Already the dam of the G1 Queensland Oaks winner Miss Keepsake and G2 winner Villifye, the colt was purchased by Brad Spicer Thoroughbreds for NZ$145,000. Brad Spicer made the following comment on his website after the purchase of the colt, “I am thrilled to have purchased such a wonderful colt today at the Karaka sales in New Zealand. He is by an emerging star in the stallion ranks in Denman out of a mare Jacilo who has had 3 foals to the races, for 2 group winners which is a fantastic strike rate.”

Fellow Darley stallion Teofilo achieved a record price for a southern hemisphere sold yearling, with lot 180 out of the Listed winner Hy Fuji making NZ$260,000 to the bid of Mulcaster Bloodstock to be trained by Chris Waller, while Street Cry had a filly out of the Stakes placed Danehill Dancer mare Chinamora (lot 74) make NZ$220,000 to the final bid of Mark Kavanagh as well as a colt out of Doduo (lot 112) make NZ$210,000 to the bid of Shaun Ritchie.

The sale will continue on Tuesday.
