Wawail too strong in Keweny

Lonhro filly wins the G2 Kewney Stakes

Winning her first four career starts including the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes, three-year-old Lonhro filly Wawail lost her unbeaten tag when third in the G3 Vanity Stakes last time out, but proved she is all class, winning the G2 Kewney Stakes over 1400m at Flemington on March 14.

Settling behind the leaders with a good run, jockey Michael Walker just needed a gap, and when it appeared, the filly forced her way through to take the lead and hold off the late charge of Street Cry filly Sabatini who had come from second last on the turn.

Bred by Shadwell Stud Australasia Ltd, Wawail is the first Stakes winner for the G2-winning Redoute’s Choice mare El Daana, who has a yearling filly by World Champion Three-year-old Sprinter Sepoy.

The sire of 50 stakes winners including G1 winners Pierro, Beaded, Mental, Bounding and the Darley stallions Denman and Benfica, Lonhro will be represented by a draft of 13 yearlings at the forthcoming Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
