Two runners for two winners

Denman colt Law becomes the second winner for his sire with Stakes victory

Literally 10 mins after two-year-old filly Grapevine became the first runner and winner for her first-season sire Denman, the Gai-Waterhouse trained Law jumped straight to the lead and produced a class effort to win the Listed Breeders’ Plate over 1000m at Royal Randwick.

With previous winners including Lonhro’s Champion son Pierro, Law was well away from the inside barrier and jockey Tim Clark did not have to pass another runner as the impressive looking colt held off the late charge of Exceed And Excel colt Mohave and David Payne’s Bernardini colt Bold Circle. Holding on well for fourth was Shamardal colt Ghibellines, a half-brother to G1-winning juvenile Guelph.

After the race, trainer Gai Waterhouse indicated that the colt would now be spelled and be readied for the G1 Golden Slipper, a formula she followed two years back with Pierro.

Bred by Freer Pty Ltd as well as Andrew and Lasca Bowcock, Law is the first runner for his dam, the G3-winning, G2 placed Sir Cat mare Lady Cat, a daughter of the Champion four-year-old mare in Chile, the 15-time winner Arabian Lady.

A winner of the G1 Golden Rose, G2 Stan Fox Stakes, G2 D’Urban Stakes and the G3 Run To The Rose, Denman won nine races in total from 12 starts and went to stud as Lonhro’s first G1 winner to head to the breeding barn.

With two winners from only two runners already, Denman is standing the current breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $27,500 (inc. GST) alongside his paternal half-brother, the G1 winner Benfica who stands at a fee of $6,600 (inc. GST), while their Champion Sire Lonhro commands a fee of $88,000 (inc. GST).
