Spellbound magical in G2 La Canada Stakes

Daughter of Bernardini closes strong at Santa Anita

It was a dramatic finish in Santa Anita's G2 La Canada Stakes, but in the end it was Bernardini's four-year-old daughter Spellbound who took the victory in the final strides.

In the 1700m race Spellbound was at the back of the field, nine-lengths off the pace. The mare charged down the stretch and took the lead in the final stages for an impressive last-to-first win. The Medaglia d'Oro filly Ondine finished a strong third.

A $260,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, Spellbound was bred by Machmer Hall and Darley Stud. Out of the Tale Of The Cat mare Layreebelle, her second dam is Graded Stakes winner Voodoo Lily who has produced five Stakes horses including G1-placed Magical Illusion.

Spellbound is the 17th Graded Stakes winner for Bernardini, who has sired the likes of G1 winners Boban, Ruud Awakening, Alpha, To Honor And Serve, and Stay Thirsty. Bernardini has four yearlings catalogued for next week's Karaka Premier yearling sale. To view their pedigrees click here.
