Songbird sings winning tune in G1 Del Mar Debutante

Juvenile daughter of Medaglia d’Oro earns G1 win in just second career start

Songbird, a two-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, put away Pretty N Cool with just over a furlong to run and pulled away to an impressive victory in the G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes, September 5.

Breaking alertly in the 1400m contest, Songbird settled just off the pace set by Pretty N Cool. Rounding the far turn, the two fillies raced in tandem, with Songbird finally shaking off her rival to pull away through the stretch to win easily and remain undefeated in her two career starts.

Bred in Kentucky by John Antonelli, Songbird was purchased for $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale by Fox Hill Farm. Songbird is out of Ivanavinalot, who captured the G2 Bonnie Miss and was second in the G2 Davona Dale as a three-year-old.

Songbird becomes the 25th Stakes winner in 2015 for Medaglia d'Oro, a figure not matched by any stallion standing in Australia. He is now the sire of 14 G1 winners including Golden Slipper winner Vancouver and Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, whose two-year-old daughter Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini) claimed the G1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga earlier in the day.

Medaglia d'Oro is standing at Kelvinside at a fee of $110,000 inc. GST.
