Second G1 victory for Tom Kitten

Son of Harry Angel wears down 1,600m champion to capture All-Star Mile at Flemington

Tom Kitten produced his finest performance on Saturday, 8 March when he nailed weight-for-age star Mr Brightside in a thrilling finish to the G1 All-Star Mile over 1,600m at Flemington.

Quietly ridden by Ben Melham, Tom Kitten avenged his narrow loss to Mr Brightside in the G1 Futurity Stakes 1,400m at Caulfield two weeks earlier with a tenacious finishing effort.

It was the second G1 victory for the son of Darley shuttle stallion Harry Angel following his win in the 2023 Spring Champion Stakes over 2,000m at Royal Randwick. The James Cummings-trained four-year-old now has six wins and six placings from 22 starts for prize-money and bonuses of $5,331,800.

A son of Australian mare Transfers, who has also produced Listed race winners Promotions and Va Via, Tom Kitten has a three-year-old half-brother by Brazen Beau and a yearling half-brother by Palace Pier on the ground.

Harry Angel was a champion sprinter for Godolphin in the UK and since retiring to stud in 2019 has sired 189 winners of 410 races worldwide, including 17 Stakes winners of 28 Stakes races.

With just under $10 million in prize money so far this season, Harry Angel currently sits seventh in the overall leading sire list. He is the leading shuttle stallion in Australia ahead of Too Darn Hot, as well as the leading third-season sire, ahead of Justify.

Just four weeks ago, Angel Capital won the G2 Autumn Stakes over 1,400m at Caulfield, and a colt by Harry Angel out of Arkiboum sold at this month’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne for $300,000 to Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu.

Harry Angel currently stands at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £10,000, Oct 1, SLF.
