Second Australian winner for Medaglia d'Oro

Matilija scores impressive debut victory at Moonee Valley

Matilija joined Nostradamus as another impressive debut two-year-old winner for Medaglia d'Oro with a comfortable victory over 1000m at Moonee Valley, February 14.

After settling just off the pace, Matilija joined the leaders turning for home before dashing clear at the top of the straight and going on to record an impressive win.

A homebred for Darley, Matilija is the first foal out of pint-sized G2-winning Red Ransom mare Romneya. A daughter of G3 winner Mannington and granddaughter of G1 Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay, Romneya is also closely related to G1 winners Bollinger, Filante and Kenny’s Best Pal.

Earlier this week Medaglia d’Oro sired his tenth G1 winner with Lochte winning the G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap. His oldest Australian bred progeny are two-year-olds and are led by Flemington winner Nostradamus who will attempt to become his sire’s 11th G1 winner in next weekend’s G1 Blue Diamond Stakes.
