Mottled makes sense

Street Sense made history as the first horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and then the Kentucky Derby and the son of Street Cry is beginning to make a name for himself as a sire.

On Saturday he enjoyed his first Melbourne winner when Mottled scored an impressive win at Flemington.

Always traveling strongly, Mottled came with his challenge in the straight and proved too strong for Mulazeem, the half-brother to Sepoy, coming away to win the Anthony Fitzpatrick & Biagio Lombardo Handicap (1410m) by two and three-quarter lengths.

This is the second win for Mottled, winner at Geelong at his previous start, and there are more to come according to Paul Snowden, Melbourne stable foreman for trainer Peter Snowden. “He’s a big raw-boned horse and he still has a bit to learn but when he puts it all together he could make up into a nice horse.”

Bred by Darley, Mottled is out of Stippled (Redoute’s Choice) with the Royal Ascot winner Greenland Park as his granddam.

At Warwick Farm, Urquidez became the first Australian Stakes performer for Street Sense when finishing second in the Listed The Rosebud over 1200 metres. 

An impressive winner at Warwick Fam on his second start, Urquidez is one of 13 Stakes horses worldwide for his sire including G3 winners Castaway and Motor City as well as the G1 performed fillies Aubby K and Miss Netta. Street Sense has been represented in Australia by three winners including Mottled and Sky Princess.

Street Sense is standing the forthcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).
