First Skilled hits the ground

Yarran Thoroughbreds produce first foal by Commands' G1-winning son

The first foal by G1-winning juvenile Skilled is a bay/brown colt out of Tre Scalini born at Yarran Thoroughbreds in Victoria on August 9.

Bred by James Ch'ng, the colt is the fourth foal out of Tre Scalini who hails from the family of Australian Horse of the Year Research.

"He is a lovely colt, very leggy and strong, very much like his father," Yarran stud manager Sinead Hughes said.

A son of Commands, Skilled won the G1 Champagne Stakes and was runner-up in the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old he was beaten by the narrowest of margins in the G1 Randwick Guineas.

Out of G2 Sandown Guineas winner Dextrous, Skilled is a three-quarter brother to G2 Pago Pago Stakes winner Sidestep who finished second behind Overreach in the G1 Golden Slipper and was the highest rated two-year-old colt in Australia last season. Skilled’s full brother is G2 Theo Marks winner Ambidexter who was also runner-up in the G1 Epsom Handicap.

Skilled covered 110 mares in his first season at stud and will stand his second season at Northwood Park at a fee of $6,600 inc. GST.
