Castaway lands Kentucky Derby prep
Although he broke from the widest post position of all, Street Sense’s three-year-old colt Castaway settled nicely into second as the field approached the first turn, a position he held until he made a winning move entering the stretch. The now-Derby hopeful was coming into the G3 Southwest off an impressive maiden win last time out and has now won twice going two turns.
Castaway comes from a family filled with blacktype, observable very quickly on his page, as his dam, the winning Storm Cat mare Priceless Storm, is a half-sister to Graded winners Master Command and Aurora Lights, in addition to Stakes-placed X Star. Second dam Lady Lochinvar is full sister to G1 winner La Gueriere (dam of G1 winner Icon Project) and G3 winner Lord of Warriors, as well as a half-sister to G1 winner Al Mamoon and G3 winner Lost Soldier. A glance at the second dam finds names such as Horse-of-the-Year Allez France and Champion Affectionately.
The win by Castaway should move his sire near the top of the list of North America’s leading second-crop sires. He becomes the second Graded winner for Street Sense, joining G3 winner Motor City, in addition to the G1-placed Miss Netta.
Street Sense has seven yearlings catalogued for the forthcoming Inglis premier yearling sale which commences on February 27 and a further 12 catalogued for the Inglis Easter yearling sale which commences on April 10.
