The Tattersalls December Foal Sale concluded in Newmarket on Saturday with a very buoyant market showing its strong approval for the first-crop sons and daughters of young Darley stallions Teofilo and Authorized.
Teofilo had topped the second session of the sale and by the time the hammer had fallen on the final lot through the ring, 14 of his offspring had sold for an average of 89,714gns ($170,975). Top price among these was for a Trickledown Stud-consigned son of the young Hector Protector mare Triton Dance, whose sole racecourse representative to date, Count John, was placed in the G3 Tetrarch Stakes. The colt was knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock for 165,000gns ($314,456).
Three other six-figure lots by Teofilo included a filly from the Stowell Hill Stud draft out of the Listed winner Anbella (pictured), who went to Shadwell for 150,000gns ($285,869), a colt out of dual Group Three winner Jessica’s Dream, bought by Tim Hyde in the final session for 140,000gns ($266,811) and Indian Belle’s colt, who made 135,000gns ($257,282).
Twelve first foals by Epsom Derby winner Authorized also made a splash, averaging 79,333gns ($151,191) throughout the four-day sale. BBA Ireland went to 170,000gns ($323,985) to secure a filly on Saturday out of Coyote, already dam of two black-type winners by Authorized’s sire Montjeu and his paternal half-brother Galileo.
Blandford Bloodstock signed the ticket at 135,000gns ($257,282) for a grey colt out of Scarlet Empire, who is a half-brother to another grey, Shamardal's Group Three-winning son Arctic. Paddy Twomey secured a colt out of Zuleika Dobson (Cadeaux Genereux) for 130,000gns ($247,753) and the Brick Kiln Stud-consigned colt out of Al Hasnaa (Zafonic) was another final-day highlight when selling for 115,000gns ($219,166).
In total, 17 Darley-sired foals sold for six-figure sums with a colt by Shamardal out of a half-sister to the Group One-winning brothers Kirklees and Mastery fetching 190,000gns ($362,100). Dubawi continues to race away at the head of the leading first-season sires’ table by number of winners. On Saturday, Dutiful became his 34th individual winner in the northern hemisphere and earlier in the week a colt foal out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Star Studded had sold for 140,000gns ($266,811). Exceed And Excel's highest-priced foal of the week was paid for a colt out of another daughter of Cadeaux Genereux, All For Laura, who was knocked down for 135,000gns ($257,282).
