The Peter Snowden-trained Backgammon, by first-season sire Domesday, made an eye-catching first raceday appearance when saluting by two lengths at Flemington over 1200m on Saturday.
The colt, who races in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed and was bred by Woodlands Stud, is out of Varied (Grand Lodge), whose half-siblings include G3 C S Hayes Stakes winner Youth (Quest For Fame) and the multiple Stakes-placed Veteran (Canny Lad). Varied has a yearling by Strategic and a foal by Any Given Saturday, both fillies.
Before Saturday, Domesday, a son of the recently deceased world-class stallion Red Ransom, has been represented by two other runners, On Her Day and Divorces, both of whom have been placed.
In Western Australia, nine-year-old Strategic gelding Stratazoa continued his admirable racing career in style by winning the Listed Ocean to Outback RS Crawford handicap over 1000m. The consistent sprinter, who was bred by Mr RB Satchell from the Keen mare Zoa, has now won 15 and placed in another 17 of his 59 starts.
