Lonhro has made a winning start to the two-year-old season after Pierro won the Listed Breeders' Plate over 1000 metres at Randwick on October 1. Pierro was Lonhro's first juvenile runner for the season.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt raced close to the speed before prevailing in a close finish to give Lonhro his 31st individual stakes winner. Pierro's debut success prompted an excited Waterhouse to declare, "We have just seen the Golden Slipper winner." Darley provided last season's Golden Slipper winner Sepoy.
Bred by Darley, Pierro is the first foal to race of the Daylami mare Miss Right Note, who is a half-sister to Laverock, the champion older horse (11 - 14f) in Italy in 2006. Darley sold the colt to David Kobritz at the 2010 Magic Millions Weanling Sale Select Session for $115,000.
Waterhouse subsequently paid $230,000 for Pierro at the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Elusive Quality colt Rusambo settled just off the pace before working home strongly for third in the Breeders' Plate.
Lonhro stands at Darley Kelvinside for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST).
