Heading into the final day of the 2009/2010 racing season, Danehill’s dual G1-winning son Exceed And Excel was on equal terms with Redoute’s Choice for the leading sire of individual two-year-old winners. By the end of the day, it was a very different story.
The day got off to a great start for the Champion first and season-season sire with the impressive victory of the Peter Moody-trained Curtana at Caulfield. Stakes placed on debut, the filly has now won two of her three starts and will head to the Listed Quezette Stakes (1100m) for three-year-old fillies at Caulfield on August 14 en-route to a Thousand Guineas campaign.
Just over an hour later, the Jason Warren-trained A City Girl broke her maiden by a half length at Bairnsdale to give her sire his 16th individual two-year-old winner, the highest number for the season.
Bred and raced by the Victorian-based Robert Crabtree, A City Girl is the third foal of the multiple Stakes-winning Serheed mare Lady Knockout. From the family of Stakes winners Expunge and Prime Again, A City Girl is bred to appreciate further and based on her pedigree could develop into an Oaks filly during the spring.
All in all, Exceed And Excel had five two-year-old runners on the final day of the racing season, with four finishing in the money. Having sired the second highest number of individual two-year-old winners for the past two seasons as well, it is an excellent achievement which highlights Exceed And Excel’s ability to produce athletic, precocious speedsters who sell well and run fast.
Exceed And Excel will stand at Darley’s Kelvinside property at a fee of $66,000 including GST.
