Alma d’Oro has been knocking on stakes victory’s door since the end of May having finished second twice and third once in his first four career stakes attempts. Well, the door finally opened for him at Delaware Park on October 5 as the field saw him drew clear at the top of the stretch and hold on for a one and one-half length victory in the Grover (Buddy) Delp Memorial Stakes.
Bred by Fred N. Sahadi, the four-year-old was purchased by her owners, Robert and Mary Ellen Bourque Stuart, at Keeneland’s November sale in 2006. He is a half-brother to stakes-placed Ford Island, and is out of the Listed-placed mare Brenda D S, she a half-sister to stakes winners Daniel’s Boy, Nicholas DS, Emma D and Joyce D.
Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of 13 other stakes winners in 2010, including American Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra and G1 winners Warrior’s Reward, Champagne d’Oro and Gabby’s Golden Gal.
Winner of the G1 Travers Stakes, G1 Whitney Handicap and the G1 Donn Handicap during his illustrious racing career, Medaglia d'Oro is currently covering his first southern hemisphere book of mares at Darley Kelvinside this season at a fee of $88,000 including GST.
