Lion Tamer storms to G1 success at Flemington
Three-year-old Storming Home colt Lion Tamer proved a class above his rivals on October 30, taking out the G1 Victoria Derby over 2500m at Flemington, Australia.
Jumping from one of the outside barriers, the Murray & Bjorn Baker-trained colt had finished runner-up at his previous start to race favourite Rekindled Interest, but found the wet conditions to his liking, powering away rounding the home turn to record a six-and-a-half-length victory over Pracedio, with Sheikh Mohammed’s Rahy colt Retrieve finishing in third.
A dual Stakes-winning two-year-old in New Zealand, connections sent the colt to Australia to contest his three-year-old season and it commenced with a Listed victory in the Ming Dynasty at Royal Randwick, where he defeated Derby runner-up Pracedio by half a length.
Bred and owned by Mr P H P Bayly, Lion Tamer is out of the Generous mare Lioness and comes from the family of dual Group One winner My Blue Denim, and this coming Tuesday’s G1 Melbourne Cup runner Harris Tweed, who incidentally is bred and raced by the same connections.
Triple G1-winning Machiavellian stallion Storming Home is also the sire of this season’s G1 Gran Premio di Milano winner Jakkalberry as well as fellow Stakes winner Flying Cloud, Atlantic Storm, Captain Webb and Mary’s Precedent.
