Cylinder was born with a stallion’s pedigree and he has fulfilled his genetic heritage on the racetrack as a G1 winner of over $3.69 million. Cylinder has an unmatched list of credentials to succeed at stud.

• By a Champion sire and Australia’s greatest two-year-old speed influence Exceed And Excel.
• Won the G1 Newmarket as a three-year-old just like his sire.
• Dam is by another Champion sire Street Cry who is emerging as a leading broodmare sire.
• From the renowned stallion-making family of Lonhro and Grosvenor (Cylinder’s dam is out of a ¾ sister to Champion sire Lonhro).
• Won two notable “stallion-making” races, the G2 Silver Slipper and G1 Newmarket.

Silver Slipper winners include Pierro, Iglesia, Strategic, Luskin Star and Baguette.

Newmarket winners include Exceed And Excel, Century, General Nediym, Baguette, Brazen Beau and seven-time Champion sire Heroic.

Cylinder’s on-pace racing style is a key ingredient for sire success in Australia, exemplified in his own sire and broodmare sire.

G1 Stats

In the case of a first-season stallion. The best clues to potential successful nicks are provided by his sire. Cylinder’s sire Exceed And Excel has left 19 individual G1 winners by 17 different sires showing his versatility which we can also expect from Cylinder. Exceed And Excel has two G1 winners out of Street Cry mares (including Cylinder himself) and two out of Elusive Quality mares, demonstrating a nick with the Mr Prospector line.

Best Nicks

Cylinder’s sire Exceed And Excel has left Stakes winners out of daughters of over 30 different broodmare sires, once again indicating versatility.

Exceed And Excel has the most individual Stakes winners out of mares by Elusive Quality, Encosta De Lago, Lonhro, Snippets and Singspiel. His best percentages are with mares by Gone West, Snippets, Elusive Quality, Dehere, Singspiel and Encosta De Lago.

Cylinder’s pedigree is free of Sadler’s Wells and his brother Fairy King. Their descendants feature in the dams of mares who nick well with Exceed And Excel. This provides opportunities as outlined in the breeding strategies below.

Inbreeding/Linebreeding options

Cylinder’s pedigree features several very influential mares close up offering a range of ways to create inbreeding and linebreeding patterns.

His dam Circular features the Blue Hen mares Helen Street, Coup De Folie, Shadea and Gay Poss. Overall he has multiple lines of Natalma and Almahmoud, two of the key females in modern pedigrees. To complete the picture Exceed And Excel’s dam is by Lomond who is inbred to La Troienne.

Strategy One

Cylinder is himself the result of one of his sire’s best nicks with Mr Prospector, but he is free of the Sadler’s Wells (and his full-brother Fairy King, sire of Encosta De Lago), Storm Cat and Green Desert lines which are generally good foils for both Cylinder’s grandsire Danehill and his broodmare sire Street Cry.

This suggests that mares by sires such as Encosta De Lago, High Chaparral, So You Think, Dundeel, Toronado, Frankel, Teofilo, Churchill, Shamardal, Puissance De Lune, and I Am Invincible would all be good options.

Strategy Two

Send mares whose sires have crossed well with Cylinder’s sire Exceed And Excel. These would include mares by Encosta De Lago or his sons, Lonhro or his sons, or mares whose pedigrees include, those two sires in their makeup. Mares from the Sadler’s Wells/Galileo, Fairy King/Encosta De Lago and Lonhro/Pierro lines would all fit this strategy.

Strategy Three

Create female family inbreeding, a proven strategy, to the elite mares in Cylinder’s ancestry. Helen Street can be duplicated with mares carrying Shamardal. Eight Carat can be duplicated with mares carrying  Commands, Zed, Deep Field or their sons. Shadea can be duplicated with mares carrying Lonhro or Niello. Lonhro has already nicked with Cylinder’s sire Exceed And Excel.

Strategy Four

Reintroduce further lines of Natalma and Almahmoud to whom Cylinder is inbred through several different strains. This can be achieved using mares carrying Danehill or Northern Dancer.  This would include some of the options suggested in earlier strategies using mares carrying Northern Dancer descendants such as Sadler’s Wells, Encosta De Lago and Shamardal. Reinforcing Danehill has become a common source of G1 winners in recent years, particularly as Danehill moves further back in the sire’s pedigree as in Cylinder’s case.

Strategy Five

Cylinder’s sire Exceed And Excel has such a strong affinity for returns of Mr Prospector that introducing more is an option. Cylinder has two lines of Mr Prospector in his dam to emphasise the point. If it works, it’s worth repeating.
