Lonhro’s abiding influence on Australian racing has been kept alive by the determined victory of his son Roheryn in Saturday’s G3 Show County Handicap at Randwick.
In a race bristling with spring hopefuls, Roheryn proved too strong, beating the G1 winner Probabeel by a long neck with Special Reward in third place.
The win, Roheryn’s sixth and his first at Group level, made him Lonhro’s 89th Stakes winner.
Jockey Jason Collett gave Roheryn the perfect run, but the pair looked to be under pressure at the 400m before the five-year-old balanced up and powered to the lead with 200m to run and kept going to score decisively.
Roheryn is out of the Stakes winner Mannington and is one of seven winners, three of them at Stakes level, from her nine to race.
Mannington is out of the G1 Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay who has also produced the G1 winner Bollinger and the G3 winner Sheraton.
Lonhro, who turned 22 this month, begins his latest season at stud at Kelvinside, NSW, in the next few weeks at a service fee of $66,000.
