The influence of the shuttle stallion on the Australian racing and breeding industry cannot be underestimated and two stallions which validate this statement are Teofilo and Medaglia d’Oro who, between them, have travelled to the southern hemisphere 14 times.
Teofilo's influence can be measured by the achievements of his G1-winning stars. Happy Clapper is his current star in the spotlight, a three-time G1 winner, who would be a six-time G1 winner if it weren’t for the world’s best racehorse, Winx (Street Cry). And one can’t forget the dominance of Humidor, also a three-time winner at G1 level claiming the G1 Memsie Stakes over 1,400m and the G1 Australian Cup over 2,000m.
His stallion son Kermadec, a dominant winner of two of Randwick’s most coveted mile contests, has first-crop yearlings in 2019 that have joined some of the best stables including Chris Waller, George Moore, Triple Crown Syndications and the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Medaglia d’Oro is a stallion who needs no introduction and whose recent accomplishments on the racetrack come as no surprise.
This southern hemisphere racing season alone he has sired 14 Stakes winners, six at Group level. These wins include a courageous performance by his son Crown Prosecutor in the G1 New Zealand Derby and the G2 win for two-year-old filly Tenley, who scored a brilliant 1.5 length victory in the Riesling Stakes at Randwick. Her performance was noted as one of the most impressive juvenile performances of the season defeating the Magic Millions two-year-old winner Exhilarates.
There was also dual Stakes-winning three-year-old filly Pohutukawa who scored a G3 win at Kembla Grange and two-year-old filly Flit, who recorded a hard-fought dead-head victory in the G3 Thoroughbred Breeder’s Stakes at Flemington in March.
While his fillies are on fire this season, you cannot ignore the dominance of his sons in recent years, most notably 2016 G1 Golden Rose hero Astern, who is currently standing at Kelvinside in New South Wales. His eldest are weanlings and will be offered through the sales in May.
Medaglia d’Oro is represented by 19 yearlings and Teofilo by six at the upcoming Easter Sale.
One colt to keep an eye on is Lot 247, from the Fastnet Rock mare Scandiva. He is bred on the same cross as Astern and his dam is a half-sister to three Stakes winners including the Victorian based G1-winning stallion Magnus, and Helsinge, the dam of wonder mare Black Caviar and G1-winning stallion All Too Hard.
Another Medaglia d’Oro yearling that will attract early interest is a filly to be sold as Lot 14, from Stakes-producing mare Flame Of Sydney. The Encosta de Lago mare has produced two Stakes winners from five foals, including two-year-old Co-Champion Colt in Australia 2016-17, G1 winner Invader.
Other exciting prospects include:
- Lot 228: Colt by Teofilo out of the Danehill mare Rose O’ War. Rose O’War was a four-time Stakes winner.
- Lot 33: Filly by Teofilo out of the Listed winning mare Whisper Bay.
- Lot 198: Colt by Medaglia d’Oro who is a half-brother to Prompt Response.
- Lot 287: Filly by Medaglia d’Oro who is out of the G1-winning mare Steps In time.
Both Teofilo and Medaglia d’Oro sit just under 10% Stakes winners to runners, which is the mark of a truly exceptional stallion. We expect to see the progeny of these two stallions in hot demand when the Inglis Easter sale commences on Tuesday, 9 April.
