He’s Australia’s leading first-season sire and a stallion whose popularity with breeders is unquestioned.
Brazen Beau, the Champion sprinter of his era and a sale topper with his first two crops, is producing racehorses that run well, sell well and who are again set to be among the most sought-after yearlings at this week’s Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne.
The Premier Sale catalogue contains 25 Brazen Beau yearlings, and according to prominent vendors Ryan Arnel of Stonehouse Thoroughbreds and Luke Anderson from Maluka Thoroughbreds, they all possess compelling qualities of athleticism, strength and attitude.
Among the Stonehouse draft is Lot 126, a filly from the Encosta de Lago mare Crimson Ribbon.
“She’s got a lot more stretch about her than a lot of the Brazen Beaus I’ve seen and a lot of people have picked up on it,” Arnel said.
“She’s our most inspected filly to date and she’s got the athleticism we see in all the Brazen Beaus and a little more length about her which I think is her selling point.”

Another is Stonehouse’s grey filly from Icy Maiden, Lot 221, whose second dam is a three-quarter sister to the G1 Caulfield Cup and G1 Queensland Oaks winner Arctic Scent.
“She’s a beautiful moving horse, she catches a lot of eyes, a lot of people have come up and said they just saw her from a distance and could we bring her back,” Arnel said.
“She’s got the page and she’s so typical of the Brazen Beaus, a great mover, great body, great muscle and she has the walk.”
Lot 221: Filly by Brazen Beau x Icy Maiden
Maluka’s additions to the Brazen Beau story are Lot 176, a filly from the Exceed And Excel mare Beautiful Pins and Lot 363, a filly from the Monde Bleu mare Oriental.
“The Oriental filly is strong, forward, very powerful which could be the Exceed And Excel coming out. She has spirit but has been very settled and coped brilliantly with her preparation for the sale,” Anderson said.
“The colt (Lot 176) has come in for a lot of attention. He’s a beautiful colt, really good size without being too big. So athletic, he just moves so well, and has the body to go with it.”

Both vendors are also represented by another of Darley’s successful young sires, Epaulette with Stonehouse to offer a filly as Lot 202 who Arnel sees as one of the value yearlings of the sale.
“She’s a really active filly and a real trainers’ filly. I absolutely love her,” he said.
“She’s not the biggest filly in the draft but she’s going to be very affordable, with the right sire and a good family behind her.”

Epaulette is in fourth place on the Australian second season sires list and has produced four individual Stakes winners in the current season, an effort Maluka’s Anderson sees as an asset to match the quality of his offspring.
“Epaulette is near the top of the tree among second season sires and the colt we’re offering (Lot 351) has it all,” he said.
“Very strong out of a New Approach mare, a brilliant athlete and very kind.”
Epaulette has 12 yearlings catalogued at the Premier Sale which begins at Inglis’s Oaklands Junction complex on Sunday, 3 March.
