Figarella’s Queen made a successful transition into Stakes competition when she went wire-to-wire to capture the Listed Sanibel Island Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Making just her fourth career start, the three-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro held off the late charge of Ferdinanda to win by a hard-fought nose. Figarella’s Queen now has two wins, a second, and a third-place finish in her brief racing career.
Bred in Kentucky by Baumann Stables, Edward Bradley and Dr. Aaron Sones, Figarella’s Queen is out of the talented turf mare Nereid, winner of the G1 American Oaks. In addition to that victory, Nereid was also second in the G1 Rodeo Drive Stakes and was third in both the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup and G1 Del Mar Oaks.
Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of top 2018 Kentucky Derby prospects Bolt d’Oro and Enticed, winners of the G2 San Felipe and G3 Gotham Stakes, respectively. The stallion was also the sire of seven G1 winners in 2017, more than any other stallion in North America. His G1 winners last year included two Breeders’ Cup winners – Talismanic (Turf) and Bar Of Gold (Filly & Mare Sprint).
