Having proved he was among Australia’s best three-year-olds in the spring, Kementari charged to a new level at Rosehill on Saturday, 24 February with a dominant victory in the G2 Hobartville Stakes.
The win followed a similarly spectacular success in the G3 Eskimo Prince Stakes two weeks earlier and earned him a lofty position among the progeny of his sire Lonhro.
In a race that brought together a high-class field of three-year-olds, Kementari’s rider Glyn Schofield made a bold move to take a position outside the leader Trapeze Artist soon after the start.
At the 300m, Schofield called for an effort and Kementari levelled up with Trapeze Artist, himself a G1 winner, and quickly put pace to him, racing clear over the final stages to score by a length from Pierata with D’Argento a nose away in third place.
Kementari has now won three races, two of which are at Stakes level and been placed at another three of his seven starts. He is among Lonhro’s 72 stakes winners.
Trainer James Cummings confirmed the colt would now go to the G1 Australian Guineas in which victory would earn him comparison to Lonhro’s best son, Pierro.
Kementari is a half-brother to the Stakes winner Telperion, out of the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Yavanna whose dam Wild Queen was a G3 winner and one of three Stakes winners produced by Kementari’s third dam Crowning Jewel (Bletchingly).
