In a win that continued the superb form of progeny by Medaglia d’Oro, Astoria came from last to overpower some well-credentialed opposition in the G3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle on September 15.
Having only his fifth start, Astoria served notice of some tantalising possibilities ahead on both the racetrack and beyond for a colt from one of Australasia’s finest families.
Astoria is out of Segue, a daughter of Antwerp, who in turn is from Diamond Lover, the dam of the G1 winners Tristalove and Dona Eduardo and a daughter of the outstanding producer, Eight Carat, the dam of Australian Horse of the Year Octagonal.
Astoria’s win fulfilled the promise he had shown from his first start when winning a Two-Year-old Handicap on debut at Randwick in March.
The colt was placed twice at G3-level in his next three starts, preparing for his latest victory when in that position over 1400m on August 26.
For Medaglia d’Oro the success also followed that earlier this month of Bolt d’Oro who became the fifth G1 winner for his sire this year when taking the Del Mar Futurity.
Bolt d’Oro is the 19th individual G1 winner for Medaglia d’Oro whose Australian crops include the G1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver and G1 Golden Rose winner Astern.
Medaglia d’Oro has just begun his latest southern hemisphere breeding season at Kelvinside for a fee of $110,00 inc GST.
