VRC Oaks to Set Square

At only her fourth career start, three-year-old Reset filly Set Square delivered a knockout blow to her rivals, claiming the G1 VRC Oaks over 2500m at Flemington on November 6 by an impressive one-and-a-half length margin.

After winning the Listed Ethereal Stakes by two lengths at her most recent start, connections were required to pay a late entry fee of $55,000 to have their filly contest the VRC Oaks, as she was not part of the original nominations.

Jumping away very well from barrier two, jockey Hugh Bowman had the filly settle in fifth position on the rail, enjoying the run of the race. Drifting back slightly as the field started to bunch when they headed for the home turn, Bowman eased his filly off the fence to make her run. Charging through a gap between the tiring leaders, Set Square surged to the lead, going on to defeat the last start G2 Wakeful Stakes winner Thunder Lady with ease.

Bred Ken King’s Parador Park Thoroughbreds and syndicated to a large group of owners; Set Square is the first Stakes winner for the Zeditave mare Dynastar and comes from the family of G1 South Australian Derby winner Testafiable.

The victory of the lightly raced filly was the fourth G1 winner for her unbeaten, dual G1-winning sire Reset, joining this season’s G1 Caulfield Stakes winner Fawkner, Cox Plate heroine Pinker Pinker and the dual Derby winner Rebel Raider.

The sire of 27 Stakes winners, Reset is standing the current breeding season at Darley Victoria’s Northwood Park at a fee of $16,500 (inc. GST).
