Earthquake takes Thoroughbred Club Stakes
Having her third run this time in, last season’s G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) headed to Caulfield and remained unbeaten at the track, claiming the G3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes over 1200m.
Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Earthquake slipped slightly when jumping away from the gates, but mustered enough speed to sit in second behind leader Tawteen.
As the field headed for home, the Champion Two-year-old balanced up and set out after the leader, claiming her near the line to record her fifth career win from eight starts.
Bred by Darley in Australia, Earthquake is out of the G3-placed Marauding mare Cataclysm, a half-sister to Stakes winners El Cambio and Complicate as well as to the dam of Listed winner Excellent Reward. Also the dam of Listed winner Palomares, Cataclysm’s current two-year-old is named Tremor, while she has a yearling filly by Sepoy and was covered last season by the very same stallion.
Earthquake is one of nine individual G1 winners for her sire that also includes Helmet, a winner of the G1 Caulfield Guineas on this day three years ago.
Exceed And Excel is standing at Kelvinside at a fee of $110,000 (inc. GST) while his Stakes-winning sons Helmet ($33,000 inc. GST) and Kuroshio ($8,800 inc. GST) stand at Northwood Park.
