Solar Deity shines in Wulfruna Stakes
Four-year-old colt Solar Deity became the 64th individual Stakes winner for his sire Exceed And Excel on 9 March with a gutsy victory in the Listed Wulfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton in the UK.
Sent off as favourite for the 1400m contest, Solar Deity was settled just off the pace under jockey Martin Harley and despite eventual second Kenny Powers laying down a strong challenge, the Marco Botti-trained colt fought back impressively to win by a short head.
Bred by Castlemartin Stud and Skymarc Farm, Solar Deity is out of the winning Docksider mare Dawn Raid, a half-sister to Irish and French 2,000 Guineas winner Bachir.
Exceed And Excel is an exceptional source of Black type winners and has sired four G1 winners to date including fellow Darley stallion Helmet, the winner of the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes and G1 Champagne Stakes at two who went on to win the G1 Caulfield Guineas in record time.
