Urquidez shows a clean pair of heels

With two winners in two days in Australia, plus two Stakes winners yesterday in the USA, Street Sense is clearly a stallion worth keeping an eye on.

Having his second start at the races, the Jarrod Austin-trained Urquidez jumped from a wide gate and was pulled back towards the rear of the field, settling in third last position.

As the field head for home, jockey Nathan Berry forced his way from behind tiring horses, and the colt accelerated extremely well, bounding down the outside of the field to gather the leaders in and race away for a commanding two-and-a-quarter length victory.

Bred and raced by Denise McGrath’s Balthasar Pty Ltd, Urquidez is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Spiral Starway, a half-sister to Stakes winner Wonderer from the family of G1 winners Desert War and Laser Hawk. Spiral Starway is in foal to Street Sense’ paternal half-brother Street Boss, who stands at Darley’s Victorian farm Northwood Park at a fee of $11,000 (inc. GST).

The sire of 12 Stakes horses including G3 winners Castaway and Motor City as well as the G1 performed fillies Aubby K and Miss Netta, Street Sense has been represented in Australia by three winners including Mottled and Sky Princess.

Standing the forthcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $38,500 (inc GST), Street Sense is a history-making son of Street Cry, having won the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the G1 Kentucky Derby.
