Bernardini’s R Gypsy Gold a hot commodity in New York
At odds of 2-1 in Belmont’s one and one-sixteenth mile Endear Stakes, R Gypsy Gold was not the post time favorite, but as the field crossed the finish line, there was no doubt who was the best horse on the fourth of July, 2012.
Breaking alertly from the gate, the four-year-old by Bernardini settled nicely into third for jockey Javier Castellano as the field approached the turn for home. As the Todd Pletcher-trained filly was asked for her run, she responded nicely and was drawing away at the end for her third consecutive victory at “The Big Sandy” and her second consecutive stakes victory.
R Gypsy Gold is bred and owned by Mrs. E. P. Robsham and is out of the Listed-placed winning mare Broadway Gold. The dam of the winner is by Seeking the Gold and is a half-sister to the 2011 G1 Florida Derby winner Dialed In. R Gypsy Gold’s third dam is the Champion two-year-old filly Eliza.
R Gypsy Gold is a G1-placed member of the first crop sired by Champion Bernardini, a group of colts and fillies that have combined for a total of eight G1 horses and four G1 winners. They include millionaires To Honor And Serve and Stay Thirsty. His second-crop, now three-year-olds, is proving just as exciting, with Graded/Group winners Algorithms, Alpha, and Gamilati. Most recently, the crop is also represented by recent G3 winners Le Bernardin and Via Villaggio.
