52 for Canny Lad
A last start third behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Hallowell Belle in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes, Canny Lad filly Ever The Same sprouted wings over the final 100m to come from off the speed to get up and defeat Exceed And Excel filly Aerobatics in the Listed P J Bell Stakes over 1200m at Canterbury.
Winning her third race from seven starts, the Anthony Cumming-trained filly has only been out of the money on one occasion. Likely to target further Stakes races during the remainder of the Autumn Carnival, any further blakc type success would further add to the already significant residual broodmare value of the three-year-old.
Taking a look back at past winners of the P J Bell Stakes, notable winners include Dane Ripper, Private Steer, Besame Mucho, and in more recent times Ortensia, the winner of the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at this year’s Dubai World Cup meeting.
Bred by Gooree Park Stud, Ever The Same is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Jamil, a three-quarter sister to G3 winner Murjana. From one of the best families in the Australian Stud Book, Ever The Same can count G1 winners Umatilla, Hurricane Sky, Al Maher, Gathering, Redoute’s Choice and Platinum Scissors as close relations.
The sire of 52 Stakes winners including G1 performers He’s No Pie Eater, Ancient Song, Dodge, Republic Lass and Calveen, Canny Lad continues to not only produce Stakes winners as a sire, but in recent weeks as the broodmare sire of G1 Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk and G1 Coolmore Classic winner Ofcourseican.
