Three-year-old filly Margot Did recorded a scorching three-quarters-of-a-length triumph in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York on August 19 to become Exceed And Excel's third G1 winner worldwide and his third Group winner of the week in Britain.
A dual Listed winner already this season, the diminutive filly won twice at two and was runner-up three times at Group level last season. In 13 starts, she has only once finished out of the first four when finishing fifth in the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes.
Bred by Nicky Hartery, Margot Did is a daughter of the multiple-winning Shareef Dancer mare Special Dancer and was bought for the bargain price of 10,000gns at Tattersalls’ 2010 Craven breeze-up sale.
Her G1 victory at York came just 24 hours after Exceed And Excel’s two-year-old daughter Best Terms remained unbeaten to win her second G2 race of the campaign, the Lowther Stakes, while on Saturday, three-year-old colt Excelebration won Newbury’s G2 Hungerford Stakes by six lengths. Also at York, two-year-old Burwaaz finished third in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes.
Exceed And Excel is also the sire of two G1-winning juveniles in Australia, the Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward For Effort and last season's Sires' Produce and Champagne Stakes hero Helmet. Ending the 2010-2011 Australian racing season with a record haul of 23 individual two-year-old winners, Exceed And Excel will stand the forthcoming season at Darley's Hunter Valley base Kelvinside at a fee of $66,000 (inc GST).
