Spirited Boss determined winner of Sanibel Island Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Three-year-old Street Boss filly impressive when earning her first Stakes victory

Spirited Boss turned back the late challenge from Candy Quest in deep stretch on her way to winning the Listed Sanibel Island Stakes by a half-length at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, 29 March.

It was the third straight win, and first Stakes victory, for the three-year-old Street Boss filly, who improved her record to three wins and a third-place finish in four career starts.

A field of 10 sophomore fillies went to the post for the seven-and-a-half furlong turf contest, with Love Cervere going off as the slight favorite. Spirited Boss broke well and was settled into a stalking position in fourth under Javier Castellano, who was content to let Bunratty Manor and Temple City Taboo set the pace.

Spirited Boss began her bid on the far turn, closing quickly and splitting rivals as she zeroed in on the leaders. Spirited Boss hit the front at the top of the lane and took command, easily holding off the late-closing Candy Quest to get the victory.

Spirited Boss was bred in Florida and races as a homebred for TAG Stables. Out of the unraced Stormy Atlantic mare, Spirited Storm, Spirited Boss is a half sister to Graded Stakes-placed Uncaptured Spirit and Stakes-placed Spirited Sol, and hails from the immediate family of Graded Stakes winners Slipstream, Porte Bonheur, Jack d’Or, and Intuition.

Street Boss has now sired a massive 998 winners worldwide. The stallion’s 10 G1 winners include former champion Australian galloper Anamoe, who won nine races at the highest level before retiring to stand at stud with his sire at Darley.

Street Boss, whose stock have won more than A$157 million in total prize money, has three fillies and a colt in the catalogue for the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney from 6-7 April.
