Talented three-year-old Souchez, a colt by Lonhro, has returned from illness to win the Listed Hilton Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on November 5.
Trained by John O’Shea and ridden by James McDonald, Souchez weaved his way through the field to win by a short neck at his second run back from a spell.
Souchez won the G2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill as a two-year-old and contracted a serious virus after he finished fourth in the G1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm in June.
He resumed with a fifth in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 15 before backing up with success in the Hilton Stakes.
The three-year-old has now won three times, twice in Stakes company, from eight starts.
Bred by Darley, Souchez is the first foal to race out of Stakes-placed Redoute’s Choice mare Vimy, a daughter of G1-winning sprinter Regimental Gal. Vimy has a two-year-old filly by Street Cry but unfortunately died last spring after foaling a Sepoy colt.
Champion three-year-old and now champion sire Lonhro has eight individual G1 winners to his name, including his sire son Denman who is a winner of the G1 Golden Rose Stakes.
Lonhro is standing the current breeding season at Kelvinside at a fee of $88,000 (inc. GST) alongside his son Denman who stands at $11,000 (inc. GST).
