Degas has been a consistent flagbearer for his sire Exceed And Excel in Germany and on Sunday, 24 June, he added a Group victory his record in eye-catching fashion when swooping late at Dortmund to land the G3 Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft.
Settled second from last for much of the nine-furlong contest, Degas was asked to make his move once into the home straight and picked up impressively to sweep past his rivals and win by half a length.
Degas was bred by Gestut Rottgen and is out of the multiple Stakes winner Diatribe, herself a half-sister to two further Stakes winners and from the family of Teofilo’s G2-winning son Diplomat, and further back in his pedigree, another Darley stallion in G1 Kentucky Derby and G1 Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom.
Exceed And Excel has now sired six Group winners so far this year, including Dubai Carnival G2 victor Heavy Metal, plus Dubai Millennium Stakes winner Folkswood.
