First-season sire Domesday recorded his second winner in impressive fashion in Sydney on Wednesday when the Peter Snowden-trained Giresun defeated stablemate Interpret (Commands) by half a length to take the 1300m two-year-old maiden.
Having been readied for his debut run with two barrier trials, the Josh Parr-ridden colt jumped away well from the gates before travelling just off the pace. As the field headed for home Giresun moved out wide to record a promising victory.Speaking after the race, Peter Snowden said, “He is a horse that we’ve always had an opinion of,”
“I’m glad he came out and did that today, he’s a nice three-year-old in the making.”
Bred by Woodlands Stud, Giresun is out of the winning Grand Lodge mare Cherry Lodge, a half-sister to the Stakes winner Liberty Rose. The third foal of the mare to race, Giresun joins the Stakes-performed three-year-old filly Kanzan (Commands) as another winner for the mare.
Giresun is the second winner to date for his G2 Silver Slipper-winning sire, joining stablemate Backgammon; an impressive winner at Flemington in December. It is interesting to note that both winners so far for Domesday are bred on the same cross; being out of mares by Grand Lodge.
Whilst speaking about Giresun after the race, Peter Snowden likened the performance of his sire Domesday to that of fellow Darley stallion Commands.
“It’s fair to say he’s done a similar job to Commands in his first season,” Snowden said.
Currently leading the general sires’ table based on individual winners, it was ironic to see that that the son of Domesday narrowly prevented Commands from reaching his 100th winner of the season with the result of this race.
Standing at Darley’s Twin Hills property, Domesday was extremely well supported in his most recent breeding season, covering 139 mares including half-sisters to G1 winners Tie The Knot, Mon Mekki and Sheer Kingston.
