The first weanlings by Darley stallion Hard Spun are selling now, and progeny of the G1 King’s Bishop Stakes winner proved popular at both Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton yesterday, with his first weanling to go through the ring realising $375,000.
The dark bay colt, who was bought by Trail Ridge Farm is out of the Stakes-winning mare Sweet Minister – already dam of a G1 winner in Sinister Minister.
Also at Keeneland, Street Cry was responsible for the second-highest priced weanling of the day when his colt out of the unraced Giant’s Causeway mare Pathway To Heaven sold for $420,000. Purchased by McMahon Bloodstock LLC, his dam is a daughter of champion four-time G1 winner Jewel Princess.
At Fasig-Tipton, Hard Spun’s top price was $300,000 for a colt out of Miss Abita – a three-parts sister to the dam of Eight Belles.
Also at Fasig-Tipton, fellow freshman sire Discreet Cat had two weanlings sell for $80,000 and $110,000. Hip 80, a chestnut filly out of the Rahy mare Famous Story - a full-sister to G3 winner Tubrok - sold for $80,000 to Michael O’Quinn. A few lots later, his bay colt out of Kittery Point was bought by Indian Creek Farm as agent for $110,000. The dam is a half-sister to multiple Stakes winner Tiffany Diamond and G1 producer Another Vegetarian – dam of Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup winner Sweet Talker.
The first weanlings by Street Sense also sold at Fasig-Tipton. Hip 37, a bay filly out of Under Fire (Gulch) was bought by Tail Feathers Farm for $110,000. Under Fire is a half-sister to three Stakes winners including Incinerate – the dam of G1 Gazelle Stakes winner In The Gold bought. Later in the session, his filly out of the unraced Vindication mare Gwinnett sold for $185,000 to Stockplace.
Also at Fasig-Tipton, Ginger Punch, in foal to Bernardini was bought by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.6m, whilst Always Awesome, in foal to Medaglia d'Oro sold for an even million dollars.
